Welcome to Braxton Tower!
Also known as the Hall of Winners, Braxton Tower finds itself connected to three other Residence Halls: Bennett Tower, Brooke Tower, and Lyon Tower, together referred to as Evansdale Residential Complex (ERC) and located on the Evansdale Campus of the West Virginia University.
Unlike the other Halls, Braxton uniquely focuses on engineering and science, hence its residents fully benefit from living and growing up with friends and neighbors whom they are most likely to find in the same classes. The Hall houses over 400 residents, about half of which are engineering majors and the remainder majoring in the variety of fields the University has to offer.
So why the name Braxton?
The Hall inherits its name from Jim Braxton who served as captain of the WVU football team in 1970 and late professional football. He lettered for three years and helped lead the 1969 Mountaineers to their 10-1 record and 14-3 victory of University of South Carolina in the Peach Bowl. He lead the team in scoring 1969 (113 points) and 1970(75 points) seasons and finished in seventh place in WVU’s all-purpose running list, with 2,781 yards. After leaving WVU, he played 71/2 years as running back with the Buffalo Bills and one season with the Miami Dolphins. His best overall year was when he rushed for 832 yards. After retiring from professional football in 1979, Braxton became an NAACP staff member, and businesman and passed away in 1986, leaving a mark as a legend in WVU history of athletics.
Living in Braxton is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not only are all the rooms air-conditioned and carpeted, each of the nine floors has its own laundry room, bathrooms, and furnished lounges for studying and group-convening needs. There are numerous resources and facilities in the ERC that are available to Braxton residents; these include tennis courts, volleyball court, and basketball courts, a post office, craft center, campus bookstore, Academic Resource Center with free tutoring, computer center, and classrooms; along with a sandwich and coffee shop, known as the Brew ‘n Gold Cafe and a large, wide variety cafeteria known as the Cafe Evansdale. Also, as a Braxton resident, you are within walking distance of many classroom buildings, the Coliseum, Milan Puskar Stadium (home of Mountaineer Field), Ruby Memorial Hospital, grocery stores and restaurants, and the Creative Arts Center. Even if there is a need to go downtown, you’re only a stone’s throw away from the PRT Station.
